This pocket is the busiest stretch of the whole coast, built up around a surf beach and doubling as the administrative hub for the wider council area.

Houses here skew heavily toward apartments rather than standalone blocks, more so than almost anywhere else nearby.

The oldest stock traces back to a 1920s land release, when small fibro and brick cottages first went up on the back streets away from the sand.

Walk-up brick flats followed through the middle of last century, and glass apartment towers have filled in the skyline around the town centre more recently.

Each layer brings its own quirks for an electrician.

A cottage from the twenties usually means wiring nobody has touched in decades, tucked behind plaster that hasn't been opened since.

A walk-up block from the sixties often still runs on an original shared switchboard that's nearing the end of its working life.

Apartment towers add a different complication again: shared supply, common-area circuits, and a body corporate whose approval has to land before we start.

Renovation and conversion work is constant across all three, and it regularly turns up cable that needs a full rewire rather than a patch.

Young professionals make up a big share of the households buying into the unit stock, and a lot of them are renovating within the first year or two of settling in.

That means kitchen and bathroom upgrades, new downlights and the odd feature wall, all of which touch the existing circuits sooner or later.

Ownership here is fairly evenly split between owner-occupiers and renters, which changes how urgently a job needs doing. A landlord chasing a compliance certificate moves at a different pace to a family without power on a Friday night.

A handful of faults dominate the callout list on jobs here.

Safety switches are the other big one. A lot of these postwar houses simply never got one fitted, and it's usually the first thing we check on an older property.

Corroded terminals inside those original boards are a common find once we get the cover off, especially within a block or two of the beach where salt air gets into everything.

A board like that often looks fine from the outside right up until it isn't, which is why we always open the cover rather than judge it from the street.

Collaroy is just up the road, which keeps this pocket on our regular run rather than an occasional detour.
